Before I had much to say about Graces of Mana, I remember reading a glowing review on IGN. People were calling it the best RPG ever made, noting how their heart was so lifted by the game. Now, four years after its release, I’m sitting here asking myself, what happened to this game? I wonder if the hype around Graces of Mana died out as it became better known or if I just didn’t give this game a fair chance when I first played it on the Xbox 360.

I’ve probably played more games in the past four years than I did in the previous twelve years of my life, but aside from Yakuza 0, which I feel is a chore to play, I haven’t quite kept up as well as I might have. With that said, I still see reviews that mention Graces of Mana in a positive light, so I guess I’m not the only person to have a mixed experience with this game. The only difference is, the game now exists for the Playstation 3, which makes me wonder, would my opinion of the game have been different if this were only a Playstation Vita game?

Graces of Mana is a fantasy RPG set in a medieval fantasy setting. There are six classes, and you can choose three of them before even beginning the game. As for the other three classes, the first one you’ll come across is the Thief. You can play as either a female or male thief, and you have the typical selection of equipment, like bow, sword and cloak. I like to play female Thieves, who often look very fierce and tough, which makes the Thief class very appealing to me. It’s also good for role-playing in my opinion, as the gender of the character is usually very noticeable when you’re playing the game. The male Thief appears weak and is better suited for solo game play than the female one. The female Thief is a little more capable of surprising others and sneaking around so she can catch an unsuspecting enemy off guard. There is no difference between the male and female Thief classes when it comes to their mechanics, so there is no reason to play the female Thief for any reason other than personal preference.

The second class is the Knight, which is a class that has been popular since old school RPGs like Final Fantasy. You can play either as male or female, and you have the typical equipment, such as bow, sword and shield. You get different techniques from the Knight class, as well as different classes of weapons and different move
