What Photoshop’s History Says About Its Future

Adobe Photoshop CS6 is a 64-bit product with a limited Photoshop Elements library. Note the increased price of Photoshop CS6 compared with Photoshop Elements 9.

As Photoshop has evolved over the years, so has it transformed image manipulation from a simple program to a full-fledged creative tool. The original designers might not have anticipated that Photoshop would have become what it is today, but it has evolved as a program to help the photographer produce the image.

The legacy of Photoshop’s past history is what indicates that its future is quite bright. The business issues, as a result, are expected to be resolved in the near future. Let’s look at the history of Photoshop and how it fits into the current market.

Image manipulation programs have had a peculiar evolution. Photoshop was first released in 1987, a milestone for digital photography. (The story goes that the programmer couldn’t find a source for a font, and he had to create one himself.)

Initially, Photoshop was just a simple tool for photo retouching. Some of its popular features were the ability to merge multiple photographs into one, as well as the ability to create soft focus effects using the feathering tool. Photoshop has evolved to include even more complex features with expansion packs and the use of Photoshop Elements. This is a good indication of the direction that Photoshop is heading in.

Adobe demonstrated the work done in the past before the release of Photoshop and the Photoshop Suite and talked about the future of Photoshop when it debuted Photoshop CS5 in 2007. The changes being made by the programmer might seem odd to you, but they indicate that Photoshop will continue its evolution into the future.

In 2008, Adobe increased the price of Photoshop CS5 by 50 percent. It was also the first time that Photoshop was advertised as a creative tool. After the 2008 price increase, however, Photoshop’s price has remained constant.

In 2011, the price of Photoshop CS6 was increased again by 15 percent, a sign of Adobe’s confidence in the product’s success.

Some of the alterations that have been made in Photoshop show the transition from a simple image retouching tool to a program that offers full creative control over the photographic process.

Not all of these features are provided for in Photoshop Elements. Most of them aren’t provided at all. While Photoshop may seem like a complex tool, the software is simple to use and learn once you understand the basics.

Foreground and Background

Using the Foreground and Background tools, you can change the visible part of the image by manipulating the Background settings.

The Transform tools allow you to distort an object to create interesting effects. You can use these tools to create a new background and foreground by copying the Background settings from an existing area in the image.

Layer Masks

A Layer Mask helps you to control which part of an image is visible in a particular layer.

Channels and Color Selections

This feature allows you to specify the colors in an image. For example, you can choose to set a particular channel of the image to a specific color, or use an eyedropper to choose the color.

Photoshop has a number of features that work in tandem to create an effect. For example, using the options for Hue and Saturation, you can create a coloring effect in an image.

Color Settings

By using this tool, you can change the color settings of a brush or pen tool. This is a quick and easy way to produce an effect.

Photoshop has many different options and features. This chapter looks at some of the more commonly used ones. However, you can always refer to the Help menu to find out more.

This chapter also provides a couple of tips on how to improve the quality and workflow of your work.

Using Layers

Photoshop comes with a basic set of layers, which will be covered in the next sections.

Basic layers

A layer is the best way to organize your designs. Every layer you create is stored in the Photoshop file as a small graphic image. You can store several layers on top of each other, which means you can combine several different effects or design elements.

You can create new layers by pressing Ctrl+N (Windows) or +N (Mac) on the keyboard. Alternatively, you can use the Layers palette, as shown in Figure 1-1. This enables you to modify the settings of any current layer.

**Figure 1-1:** The Layers palette contains a collection of layers.

You can use different types of layers:

Multilayer: These are layers that have a different type of pattern, color, or style. For example, a Multilayer can be used as a Background and a Foreground Layer.

Normal layer: These are just that — normal layer. Normally, you use a Normal

What’s New in the?

A game about taking photos of letters (in 50 lines of JavaScript) – kyberias

I was thinking the other day about how silly it is that many children enjoy
writing and reading. I think I had wondered if this was a trait most humans
have maintained from our earliest days. I have recently been hooked on
Reading Rainbow reruns and the library in the new educational movie
Kick-Ass. I am interested to see how two threads will come together.

What’s the idea behind this, why is this so cool?

I know it’s a bit simple, but I thought it would be fun to try to capture some
of the pure joy children get from playing with letters and writing letters.

I was never so happy as the time I spent playing with words and letters in my
childhood. I think all kids feel this way about reading and writing.
