How should I store your recurring subscriptions?

I’m starting a new web-app and I’m wondering what the best way to store recurring subscriptions is.
The current solution I have is a table with 2 columns in it.

Subscription Id (auto-incrementing integer)
Subscription value.

The benefit is that I can easily insert, delete and modify a record in the database. However I’ve been told in other forums that these kind of ID’s have an impact on the performance of inserts, I’m not sure how big or how serious of an impact it really is but I still worry about doing something wrong.
Should I just not worry about it and insert them whenever they are renewed? Or should I insert them on their due date and delete them afterwards?

A:

This is a very subjective question.
I personally believe that you should not keep a record of future appointments in a database. For example, if a customer signs up for a week subscription – add the record to the database and that’s it.
When the payment/subscription terms are expired – delete the record.
Note: where possible, it would be preferable to keep it in the database because it is possible to look at the table to check that the customer has not missed any future payments.
