It’s been a long time since FFXIII: The End came out, and most of the opinion makers, including IGN’s staff, have left it behind. While that’s not to say that the game wasn’t good or that the passion of its fans were, sadly, misplaced — we’ve talked about that over and over again in the past few years. But the main issue is that the game was a more fitting ending to a series. The franchise was flawed from the start, simply because it could be a means to argue, and the game didn’t really deliver on that point, or any point for that matter.

The reason we don’t know the ending of FFXIII: A Realm Reborn isn’t because Square Enix did something sneaky. It’s because the same company that put the game together decided to shut down the servers to keep it a secret. The fact that Square Enix chose to do that despite the fact that the game was a commercial success — I don’t know, they probably thought of the numbers a few times — it’s their choice. But that doesn’t change the fact that the game had an ending that Square Enix itself decided was most fitting for the story.

Where does that leave us? The game was announced before A Realm Reborn, but since A Realm Reborn was confirmed we’ve talked about how just about all of the main points in the story came to a head in the original game. The story has a climax at the end, and the truth is it was never meant to end there. The only point of the game that I think had it’s best ending was the romance part that was cut from the game. The final three chapters of A Realm Reborn explore the backstory of how Noctis, Chocobos, and the crew of the Cocoon became capable of traveling to the past.

Where does the story go from here? Who knows. We know that Serena and Noctis still have something going on, but it’s all secret, unless you’re friends with the Royal Paladin (or maybe the game’s actually not done, I don’t know, I think this review was long enough). The most interesting bit about the game is that it’s set in the same universe as FFXIII and FFXIII-2. It will fit in there, for better or worse. But it’s not set in the same universe.
