“Combat really isn’t far-fetched, which is kind of weird when you think about it – this is an action-RPG, after all – but the issue lies in its short level design and brokenness. Depending on the party composition you assemble, the battle isn’t so difficult because of the sheer quantity of enemies you can dispatch within so short a span. Yet the battle won’t give you a prolonged sense of satisfaction after it’s over, nor will it tell you anything real about the story.”

The combat system has been improved somewhat, but is still incredibly simple.

“My hope was that it would feel like a traditional RPG combat, with a few new twists here and there, but unfortunately this just doesn’t feel that way. First of all, you have no command buttons, so there’s really no way to slow down, turn around, or make a quick dive behind cover. This creates a fundamentally different experience, and it creates a situation where you can either be incredibly impulsive or extremely cautious, but there’s no other option than to make a choice in that regard. In addition, the movement system is poorly tuned, which again leads to impulsive action unless you plan out every step. The camera itself is a problem too, as it can be a little stubborn at times when you’re moving around quickly.”

“To see the true potential of the combat, you’ll have to make a large, competent party. You can’t find the game’s greatest strength, either, since your goal isn’t to be a flawless hero as you progress through the story. Rather, you’ll have to have a combination of melee and ranged enemies as you fight off the army of orcs, the undead, and other things that want to take you down. The game is more like something you’d find in a casino, not like something you’d enjoy at home, which is a little disappointing for a game that’s supposed to be inspired by Final Fantasy X.”

As a dungeon-crawler, it was “Broken”.
